Frank Catalano
Description
Frank Catalano is an American voice actor and writer recognized for his extensive work in English-language dubs of anime series during the 1980s and 1990s. Born in 1961 in Brooklyn, New York, his career in performance and adaptation began with live-action Japanese series before transitioning to animated productions.
Catalano's entry into voice-over and script work originated from his role in the Japanese live-action series Ultra 7, where he was initially hired as a voice actor. He took on the task of adapting the literally translated scripts into conversational English, a form of script writing known as ADR or dubbing. This early experience in both performing and script adaptation defined his multifaceted career in the industry. He subsequently performed in and wrote for numerous animated and live-action television series and feature films.
He is most prominently known for his numerous roles in the seminal sci-fi anime series Robotech. Catalano is recognized for portraying a wide array of characters across the series' different sagas, making him the actor with the most roles in the production. His most notable part is that of Rand in the Robotech: The New Generation saga. His other roles in the series include Bobby and Dan in The Macross Saga, as well as Sparks, Johnson, Simon, Eddie, and Dennis Brown in Robotech: The Robotech Masters. His connection to the franchise extended beyond voice work; he authored a memoir about his experiences titled Rand Unwrapped: Confessions of a Robotech Warrior. He also appeared at Robotech conventions in the 1980s dressed as the character Rick Hunter, a character he resembled but did not voice.
Beyond Robotech, Catalano contributed voices to a wide range of other anime and animated series. His credits include roles in The Adventures of Hutch the Honeybee, Digimon Digital Monsters, Flint the Time Detective, Vampire Princess Miyu, and Super Pig. He is also credited with the role of Michael in the series My Favorite Fairy Tales. His work extended to live-action television, with appearances in series such as LA Law, NYPD Blue, and Ugly Betty.
In addition to his on-screen and voice work, Catalano has had a significant career as an educator and author. He is a member of the faculty of the School of Dramatic Arts at the University of Southern California and has taught at other institutions. He also held executive positions at major studios, including Warner Bros and Lorimar Studios. He has written numerous books on acting, auditioning, and screenwriting, drawing on his extensive experience in the entertainment industry.
