Jochen Sehrndt
Description
Jochen Sehrndt was a German actor and voice artist, born Hans-Joachim Sehrndt on March 28, 1925, in Berlin. He began his artistic career after receiving training from Hilde Körber, starting on stage in the late 1940s at the theater in Luckenwalde. His early career involved performances at small Berlin theaters and on stages in East Germany before he moved to West Berlin and later to Hamburg, which became the center of his professional activity from the 1960s onward. His stage work included performances at notable venues such as the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin and the Ernst-Deutsch-Theater in Hamburg.
While Sehrndt appeared in numerous film and television productions, including roles in the films Die Engel von St. Pauli and Die Verrohung des Franz Blum, he became best known to a wide audience for his extensive voice work. He was a prolific voice actor in German audio drama series, particularly for the Europa label. Among his most prominent roles was the dual part of the cowardly cat Cringer and his brave alter ego Battle Cat in the popular series Masters of the Universe, a role he also voiced in the 1985 animated film The Secret of the Sword. He was also heard in many episodes of the long-running detective series Die drei Fragezeichen, as well as in productions of TKKG, Asterix, and the series Tom & Locke.
As a voice actor for animated series and films, Sehrndt contributed to the German versions of several international productions. He voiced the wolf leader Akeela in the Japanese anime series Jungle Book: Shōnen Mowgli, as well as characters in the He-Man series and the 1991 German dub of The New Adventures of Batman. His work also extended to dubbing live-action actors, lending his voice to performers such as Sam Jaffe in an episode of Columbo and Aldo Sambrell in the film Face to Face. Furthermore, he was a familiar voice in the German co-production of Sesame Street, Sesamstrasse, where he voiced the character Herry Monster, known as Lulatsch, among other Muppet roles.
Jochen Sehrndt is understood to have passed away, though a specific date has not been publicly confirmed. His legacy is defined by his versatile voice, which brought a wide range of characters to life for German audiences across audio dramas, animation, and dubbing for decades.
