Pierre Tornade was a French actor renowned for his distinctive deep voice, which led to a prolific and celebrated career in dubbing, particularly for animated films and television series. Born on January 21, 1930, in Bort-les-Orgues, France, he began his career in theater before transitioning to film and television, appearing in over 120 productions. His tall and imposing stature often saw him cast in roles as policemen or soldiers in live-action comedies and dramas. However, it was his voice work that cemented his legacy as one of France's most beloved character voices.

Tornade's voice acting career is most famously associated with two major Franco-Belgian comic series. He was the first voice of the dim-witted but good-natured giant Obelix in several Asterix animated films, starting with Asterix Versus Caesar in 1985 and continuing with Asterix in Britain, Asterix and the Big Fight, and Asterix Conquers America. Prior to voicing Obelix, he had already lent his voice to other characters in the franchise, including the village chief Vitalstatistix in the earlier films Asterix the Gaul, Asterix and Cleopatra, and The Twelve Tasks of Asterix. In parallel with his Asterix roles, Tornade also became the defining voice of Averell Dalton, the tallest and most foolish of the Dalton brothers, in the Lucky Luke animated films and series, beginning with Daisy Town in 1971.

Beyond these iconic roles, his work reached international co-productions and Japanese anime dubbed for French audiences. He provided the French voice for the character Wowser in the 1989 animated series of the same name. This series is known in Japanese as Don-Don Domel to Ron and in French as Cubitus, based on the Belgian comic of the same name. Tornade voiced the titular character, Cubitus, a large, lazy, and food-loving white dog. He also voiced the character Baloo the bear in the French-language version of the 1989 Japanese anime series Jungle Book Shōnen Mowgli.

Pierre Tornade's contributions to French culture, both as a live-action and voice actor, were recognized in 1996 when he was named a Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of Merit. He continued to work in voice acting into the 2000s, reprising his role as Obelix in the Asterix & Obelix XXL video games. Pierre Tornade passed away on March 7, 2012, leaving behind a rich body of work that has entertained generations.
