Masayo Kawaguchi

Description
Masayo Kawaguchi is a Japanese freelance journalist and former voice actor and singer, widely recognized for her sole but iconic role in the world of anime and video games. Born in Tokyo, she studied theater and drama at the College of Art at Nihon University. Her career in entertainment began in 1981 when, as a student, she participated in a radio program and debuted as a singer-songwriter, releasing music under her own name. During this period, she also appeared in television dramas, including a role in the TBS series 2年B組仙八先生.

Kawaguchi's most significant and enduring contribution to voice acting came in 1994 when she provided the voice for the character Ayako Katagiri in the Konami dating simulation game Tokimeki Memorial. Katagiri, an art student with a quirky habit of mixing English into her everyday speech, became a beloved character in the franchise. This role marked Kawaguchi's sole major voice acting credit, but it left a substantial legacy. She performed the character across various media related to the series, including in drama CDs and the Tokimeki Memorial Drama Series Vol. 2 for the PlayStation, a game that blended adventure elements with the original's characters.

Beyond voice acting, her involvement with Tokimeki Memorial highlighted her musical talents. She performed several songs from the perspective of her character, Ayako Katagiri. Tracks like Aya's Cooking Lesson, You can say!, and Summer Girl were featured on various Tokimeki Memorial albums and compilations throughout the 1990s, further solidifying the character's presence in the franchise's expanded universe. Her work as a singer led to the release of her own album,, in 1998, which compiled many of these character songs alongside her original music.

In 1995, at the height of Tokimeki Memorial's popularity, Kawaguchi transitioned away from entertainment to pursue a career in journalism, relocating to the United States to work as a correspondent. She has since built a long and distinguished career as a freelance journalist, reporting for major Japanese broadcasters such as NHK and MBS. Based in New York for many years and later moving to the Boston area in 2018, she has covered a wide range of stories, including being on the scene during the September 11 attacks in 2001. A member of the Screen Actors Guild, her professional life is now entirely focused on journalism, though her brief but impactful time as the voice of Ayako Katagiri remains a notable chapter in the history of the Tokimeki Memorial series.
