Shigetoshi Ikehara
Description
Shigetoshi Ikehara is a Japanese manga artist and anime creator, born on February 26, 1952, in Nyūzen-machi, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. While he works under the professional name Shigeto Ikehara, his real name is Shigetoshi Ikehara, and he has also used the pseudonyms Ike Ayako and Hara Shigeru.
Ikehara began his career in the anime industry in 1970 when he joined Mushi Production, the studio founded by the legendary Osamu Tezuka. He served as an assistant on Tezuka's works, including Marvelous Melmo and Miracle Shoujo Limit-chan, an experience that deeply shaped his artistic identity. He began his activity as an independent manga writer in 1971.
As an original creator for anime, Ikehara is credited as a co-writer for the television series Choujin Sentai Barattack, known in some territories as Balatack. The show, a super robot anime produced by Toei Animation, was developed from a screenplay by Ikehara alongside Dan Kobayashi. The series was later adapted into a manga format that followed the events of the anime.
Ikehara is also highly notable for his extensive work adapting popular media into manga. He produced manga versions of numerous major mecha and science fiction anime series, including Space Runaway Ideon for Comic BomBom, Aura Battler Dunbine, Heavy Metal L-Gaim, and Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. He also worked on adaptations of Jetter Mars, Science Fiction Saiyuki Starzinger, and Fireman.
He is perhaps best known internationally for his long-running manga adaptation of the video game franchise Mega Man. Published by Kodansha in Comic BomBom from 1992 to 1996, his Rockman series covered numerous game entries, including Rockman, Rockman 4 through 7, Rockman World, and related story arcs such as Rockman: The Plan of Dr. Wily and Irregular Hunter X.
Ikehara's body of work demonstrates a career focused on expanding the narratives of popular Japanese media, bridging the gap between anime, video games, and manga. His significance in the industry lies in his role as a key adapter and interpreter of major franchises for a young audience, as well as his direct creative contribution to original anime productions in the late 1970s.
