Description
Pierre Fromont was a French actor and director, primarily recognized for his extensive work in dubbing foreign films and television series, particularly Japanese anime, for the French market. Born on June 30, 1925, in Roubaix, France, he passed away on September 16, 2015, at the age of 90. His career spanned several decades, during which he became a familiar voice to French audiences, especially those who grew up watching anime in the 1980s and 1990s.

Fromont was highly active in the dubbing industry, lending his voice to numerous anime series. He is perhaps most famously remembered as the voice of the sports commentator in the iconic series Olive et Tom, known internationally as Captain Tsubasa. This role made him a staple for viewers of the show, which was broadcast in France on La Cinq and later in the Club Dorothée program. He also voiced the commentator in another sports-themed anime, Jeanne et Serge, known as Attacker You!. His voice work in Attacker You! also included the roles of M. Sachita, Mr. Yamaoka, and Toshiko Hazuki.

His contributions to anime dubbing were prolific and spanned a wide range of series. He was the voice of the father in Blue Blink, known in French as Magie Bleue. In Kickers, he voiced the characters Luc and Père de Rudy. He also had roles in series such as Étoile de la Seine, where he played the Comte de Vaudreuil, the Narrator, and Lieutenant Gaspard, among others. His other notable anime voice roles included work in Albator (Space Pirate Captain Harlock), where he voiced Bebop and other characters, and in various roles in series like Attack No. 1, where he played Michel and Régis Rivière. The Anime News Network encyclopedia credits him with voice work in dozens of other anime adaptations, including Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Candy Candy, Captain Future, Grendizer, and Sherlock Hound, demonstrating the breadth of his presence in the industry.

Beyond providing voices, Pierre Fromont also took on the role of dubbing director for several major anime series. He served as the dubbing director for the French versions of Attacker You!, Blue Blink, Captain Tsubasa, and the multiple series within the Attack No. 1 franchise, as well as Hello! Spank. This role placed him in charge of the artistic direction of the French adaptations, overseeing other voice actors and ensuring the translated scripts were performed effectively. Notably, he directed the French dub for the series Magie Bleue at the Studio Euro Inter Films.

Outside of his work in animation, Fromont was an accomplished stage and screen actor. He had a significant presence in French theatre, with performances in plays such as an adaptation of J'irai cracher sur vos tombes in 1948 and Valses de Vienne in 1974. On television, he appeared in live-action series like the acclaimed historical drama Les Rois maudits and the adventure series Les Chevaliers du ciel during the 1960s and 1970s. His film credits include roles in movies such as L'Honneur d'un capitaine in 1982 and Des gens sans importance in 1955.

His legacy in the world of French dubbing is significant, having helped introduce and popularize Japanese animation for a generation of French viewers. His voice, particularly as the excitable commentator in Olive et Tom, remains fondly remembered. He was also the father of actress Anneliese Fromont, with whom he occasionally worked, as she voiced the character Magic in Magie Bleue, for which he was the dubbing director.
