Richard Dumont is a Canadian actor, voice actor, writer, and director with a career spanning several decades in both Canadian and American productions. Born in Toronto, Ontario, he studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and later pursued theater-acting at Ryerson University from 1977 to 1979 before joining the comedy troupe The Second City. His on-screen career began in 1986 with a role in the film Choices, and he quickly expanded into voice work.
Dumont is best known for his extensive voice acting in numerous animated series and films, particularly those dubbed for English-speaking audiences. Among his most recognized roles is the voice of Willi, the nervous and worried best friend of the title character in the English version of the classic series Maya the Bee. He also provided the voice for the Scarecrow in the 1987 animated series The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its subsequent installments, including The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, and The Emerald City of Oz. Another notable voice role is Snuffly in the anime series Mori no Yōki na Kobito-tachi: Berufi to Rirubitto.
Beyond these, his voice portfolio is vast and includes the roles of Menator, the aging leader of the Olmecs in The Mysterious Cities of Gold; King in The World of David the Gnome; Grognard in Night Hood; Mr. Besser in the Canadian dub of The Kids from Room 402; and Prince Lothar in the Saban version of The Adventures of the Little Mermaid. He also voiced characters in later episodes of the long-running series Arthur and took on the role of Crusher in the English adaptation of Beyblade. In addition to animation, Dumont is well-regarded for his live-action role as Sardo, the proprietor of a magic shop, in the popular Nickelodeon horror anthology series Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
