Masako Ebisu

Masako Ebisu, born on January 21, 1945, in Tokyo, Japan, is a veteran Japanese voice actor and narrator. Her real name is Masako Hoshino. She was affiliated with the talent management firm Ohsawa Office.

Ebisu began her career in the late 1960s and was active during the formative years of Japanese television anime. She is known for her work in several classic and influential series from that era.

One of her earliest and most prominent roles was as Ryouko Kakinouchi in the 1969 sports anime Attack No. 1, a series about a high school volleyball team. In 1969, she also began providing the voice for the character Taiko Namino in the long-running series Sazae-san, a role she held for a decade. Another significant role from the same period was Yōko Shiraki in the boxing classic Ashita no Joe.

In 1973, Ebisu made history by becoming the first voice actor to portray the character Shizuka Minamoto in the initial anime adaptation of the beloved manga Doraemon. That same year, she voiced Takane Fujino in another Fujiko F. Fujio work, Jungle Kurobe. Her role in the 1974 series Tonari no Tamageta-kun was notable for its range, as she voiced three different characters: Yoko, Herumeko, and Yasushi's Mother.

Throughout her career, Ebisu took on a wide variety of roles in many other productions. Her filmography includes parts in Galaxy Express 999, Gatchaman, and the film Harmagedon. She also worked as a narrator, notably for the series Hiwou War Chronicles. Her last known roles were in the early 1980s, including appearances in the anime adaptation of the historical drama Manga Nihon-shi and the film Wagahai wa Neko de Aru.

Ebisu's career is distinguished by her contributions to some of the most foundational titles in Japanese animation, leaving a lasting impact through characters in Attack No. 1, Ashita no Joe, and as the original voice of a beloved character in the Doraemon franchise.
