Claudio Rodriguez

Description
Claudio Rodriguez was a highly esteemed Spanish voice actor, born in Zamora, Spain, on August 31, 1933. His career in voice performance began after he abandoned his university engineering studies to pursue work in radio, joining Radio Juventud de España where he performed alongside Luis del Olmo. He transitioned into dubbing after successfully passing an audition for the studio Fono España, with his first major credit being a role in the film The Longest Day in 1962. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he lent his voice to over two thousand films and television series, becoming one of the most recognizable and prolific voices in Spanish media. Rodriguez passed away on December 4, 2019, at the age of 86.

While Rodriguez was primarily known for dubbing live-action actors, he had a significant presence in the world of animation, with one of his most iconic roles being the title character in the Japanese-Spanish animated series Around the World with Willy Fog. He voiced the intrepid lion Willy Fog in this 1981 adaptation of the Jules Verne classic, a role that has endured in the memory of many viewers. He also provided the voice for the narrator in the series Ruy, the Little Cid and was the voice of the villainous Lord of Treville in another popular canine-centric series, D'Artacan and the Three Musketeers. His work extended to feature films from major studios; he was the commanding voice of Zeus in Disney's Hercules, King Triton in The Little Mermaid, and Fowler in Chicken Run.

Rodriguez's dubbing work was not limited to animation; he was the regular Spanish voice for an extensive list of Hollywood legends. He was most famously associated with Charlton Heston, whom he dubbed in dozens of films including Ben-Hur and Planet of the Apes, an actor who personally thanked Rodriguez, crediting him for his fame in Spain. He was also the voice for Sean Connery, Burt Lancaster, John Wayne, and Anthony Quinn, among many others. For younger generations, he became equally well-known as the voice of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, dubbing both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in their portrayals of the beloved headmaster. He considered his work as Salieri in Amadeus to be his most challenging and memorable performance.

In addition to his voice work, Rodriguez also appeared on screen in small roles in Spanish films such as La fuga de Segovia and El viaje a ninguna parte, as well as television series including El comisario and Manos a la obra. He was a dedicated teacher of dubbing, giving courses for the Community of Madrid and at AM Estudios. His immense contribution to the art of dubbing was recognized in 2018 when he received the Premio Actúa from the Fundación AISGE, an award celebrating his lifetime achievements.
