Bernard Thiphaine

Description
Bernard Tiphaine was a renowned French actor and artistic director, born in Paris on July 29, 1938, who became one of the most distinguished and recognizable voices in French dubbing until his passing on October 19, 2021. His career began on screen and stage, with early film appearances in notable works such as Louis Malle's Le Feu follet in 1963 and La Difficulté d'être infidèle in 1964, alongside a substantial body of work in television and theatre throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including performances in the celebrated series Au théâtre ce soir and plays like Boeing Boeing and Le Colonel Chabert.

However, it was his prolific work in dubbing for which he became a legendary figure. From the 1970s onward, Tiphaine became the regular French voice for a host of major international stars. He was the official French voice of Chuck Norris, most famously in the long-running series Walker, Texas Ranger, which made his voice a Sunday afternoon staple for millions of French viewers. His collaborations were extensive and defining; he voiced Christopher Walken in thirty-nine films, including A View to a Kill and The Deer Hunter, Donald Sutherland in twenty-seven films, including the Hunger Games series, and James Caan in over twenty films, such as The Godfather. His distinctive timbre was also lent to actors like Jeremy Irons, Harvey Keitel, and Anthony Perkins.

In the realm of animation, Tiphaine brought to life some of the most iconic characters for French audiences. He was the voice of the sardonic robot Bender in the first three seasons of Futurama, the critical gastronome Anton Ego in Pixar's Ratatouille, and the eccentric Dr. Finkelstein in The Nightmare Before Christmas. His animation work also included the character Jean-Roger Cornichon in the Rugrats franchise and, as cited by the user, the role of Philéas Fox in the Spanish-Japanese animated series Around the World with Willy Fog. His voice was equally present in video games, notably as President John Henry Eden in Fallout 3 and Riordan in Dragon Age: Origins.

Beyond performing, Tiphaine also worked as an artistic director, supervising the French dubbing for television series such as Supernatural and Sept à la maison. His immense contribution to the craft was celebrated in 2017 when he participated in the short film On s'est fait doubler!, alongside fifteen other major figures in French dubbing. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2018, he retired from his professional activities. Bernard Tiphaine passed away in 2021, leaving behind a legacy as a giant of his craft, a voice that had become an intimate part of French cinematic and television culture.
