Okemaru

Description
Okemaru is the original creator behind the light novel series, manga, and anime Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha, which is known in English as The Dreaming Boy Is a Realist. Okemaru began writing the story as a web novel on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō on December 7, 2018. The series later won the HJ Bunko Award in 2019, which led to its acquisition by publisher Hobby Japan. Hobby Japan began publishing the light novel version under its HJ Bunko imprint on June 1, 2020, with illustrations provided by artist Saba Mizore.

Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha represents Okemaru's second web novel. The author has stated that the story was inspired by a significant life event that had previously brought writing to a halt, followed by a desire to resume创作 after a fresh start in real life. Okemaru chose the romantic comedy genre because, having left youth behind and entered the workforce, it became possible to view such relationships objectively. The work is described as containing answers to the questions about love that occupied the author during their own teenage years.

The narrative follows Wataru Sajo, a high school student who is deeply infatuated with his classmate Aika Natsukawa. After a sudden realization that he is not worthy of her, he makes a conscious decision to distance himself. This change in behavior confuses Aika, who had grown accustomed to his advances, and the story follows the resulting romantic comedy of misunderstandings between two people who cannot properly convey their feelings. Okemaru has revealed that the protagonist Wataru is closely modeled on the author's own 15-year-old self, with the addition of some adult sensibilities regarding social conventions. The character of Kaede Sajo, Wataru's older sister, was inspired by the mysterious personality of a friend's older sister.

A manga adaptation of the light novel, illustrated by Popuri Yoshikita, was serialized on Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace Plus website from March 26, 2021, to March 18, 2024, and was compiled into five volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by the animation studios Studio Gokumi and AXsiZ aired from July 4, 2023, to September 19, 2023, consisting of twelve episodes. The author has noted that while the light novel focuses on conveying the protagonist's思维方式 and humor, the anime adaptation places greater emphasis on the heroine's charm and expressions, particularly Aika's flustered reactions to Wataru. Okemaru has also explained the importance of leaving certain details, such as classroom seating arrangements, unspecified in the source material to allow for later additions and to give readers room for imagination.
