Ren Eguchi

Description
Ren Eguchi is a Japanese author best known as the creator of the popular isekai series Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill. Eguchi began writing the series as a web novel on the user-generated site Shōsetsuka ni Narō on January 5, 2016. The series proved successful and was later acquired for print publication by Overlap, who began releasing it as a light novel under their Overlap Novels imprint on November 25, 2016, with illustrations provided by artist Masa. As the original creator, Eguchi is credited with the story for all subsequent adaptations of the work.

The success of the light novel led to a manga adaptation, illustrated by Akagishi K, which began serialization on Overlap’s Comic Gardo website on March 24, 2017. Eguchi’s creation also spawned a spin-off manga series, Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill: Sui's Great Adventure, which focuses on the character Sui the slime. This spin-off began serialization on the same website on August 24, 2018, and is illustrated by Momo Futaba. The franchise reached a wider audience with an anime television series adaptation produced by the acclaimed studio MAPPA, which aired from January to March 2023. A second season of the anime has been announced.

Eguchi’s work on Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill is characterized by a distinct blend of genres that sets it apart in the isekai landscape. While the protagonist, Tsuyoshi Mukouda, is summoned to a fantasy world, the series de-emphasizes traditional combat and heroic quests in favor of cooking and gastronomy. The core narrative drive comes from Mukouda’s unique skill, Online Supermarket, which allows him to purchase modern Japanese food items. The story focuses on his travels as he cooks for his increasingly powerful mythical familiars, using his culinary knowledge to forge bonds and navigate his new life. This emphasis on the comforting and unifying nature of food, often depicted in loving detail, alongside lighthearted comedy and slice-of-life adventure, forms the artistic identity of Eguchi’s work.

Ren Eguchi holds a significant place in the contemporary anime and manga industry as an original creator whose work successfully transitioned through multiple media formats, from web novel to light novel to manga to anime. The series has been licensed for English release by J-Novel Club for the light novels and both manga series, with Yen Press handling the print edition of the main manga. The widespread popularity of the franchise, evidenced by the sustained publication of all versions and the production of a second anime season by MAPPA, demonstrates Eguchi’s importance as a creator whose work has resonated strongly with audiences seeking a more relaxed and culinary-focused take on the isekai genre.
