Zappon

Description
Zappon is the author of the Japanese light novel series Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside, which has been adapted into a manga and an anime television series. The original story began as a web novel serialized on the user-generated publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2017. The series gained enough attention to be acquired by Kadokawa Shoten, which began publishing it as a light novel in June 2018 under its Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint, with illustrations provided by the artist Yasumo. The light novel series concluded its run in July 2025 after fifteen volumes.

The property has seen multiple adaptations across different media. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Masahiro Ikeno, began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine in May 2018. A second manga series, a spin-off titled Rejected by the Hero’s Party, a Princess Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside with art by Mutsuki Higashioji, began serialization in October 2021. The first season of the anime adaptation, co-produced by the animation studios Wolfsbane and Studio Flad, aired from October to December 2021. A second season, produced by Studio Flad, aired from January to March 2024.

Thematically, Zappon’s work is recognized for its blend of fantasy and slice-of-life genres. The narrative is centered on characters who choose to step away from grand, destiny-driven adventures to seek a peaceful, quiet existence. This premise is built upon a world where individuals are born with Divine Blessings that dictate their roles and compulsions, and the story explores the tension between these predetermined paths and the pursuit of personal freedom and self-defined happiness. The inspiration for this central conflict is noted to have come from an article about the Hindu caste system, which led the author to consider the societal and personal impacts of having one’s life role fixed from birth.

In terms of industry significance, the franchise has achieved commercial success and critical recognition. The series won first place in the bunko category of the Next Hit Light Novel Election in 2019. By May 2024, the franchise had sold over three million copies, including digital editions.
