Otoh Saki
Description
Otoh Saki is a Japanese manga author and designer, born on December 16, 1976. She is best known as the writer of the crime action manga Switch, which was later adapted into an original video animation. Otoh Saki is part of a creative duo known as Naked Ape, working in collaboration with the illustrator Tomomi Nakamura. Under the group name naked ape, the pair have produced several manga series and have also released numerous dōjinshi as the circle Acute Girls. Otoh Saki has also collaborated with the manga artist Kana Yamamoto under the circle name Negahyst.
The most notable work credited to Otoh Saki is the manga Switch, which was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine from 2002 to October 2008. The story follows two young undercover investigators in a narcotics control department, exploring themes of memory, trauma, and a hidden violent alter ego. The manga was compiled into thirteen tankōbon volumes. An anime adaptation of Switch was produced as a two-episode original video animation released in October 2008 and February 2009, directed by Naoki Oohira and produced by the studio Actas.
Beyond Switch, Otoh Saki has been credited as the writer for other original manga works created with Tomomi Nakamura, including Di[e]ce, Dolls, Halcyon, Kotō no Oni, and Magnolia. She has also been associated with titles such as Egomix, Gin no Kerberos, and Kisshou 7. Over the course of her career, Otoh Saki has used several different pen names. She was previously known as Rira Kotone and changed to Rira Aikawa in October 2012. Other names associated with the creator include Roka Saki and Lira Aikawa.
Otoh Saki primarily serves as the writer and story creator, working with an artist to produce complete manga works. This collaborative structure as part of naked ape defines her creative identity, with her role being that of the author rather than an illustrator. Her work is significant for its focus on action and thriller genres, often involving law enforcement or criminal investigations, and for its success in being licensed for an English-language release in North America by Viz Media.
