Maurice Druon

Description
Maurice Druon was a French novelist, cultural politician, and member of the Académie française, whose celebrated literary career led to a singular but notable contribution to the world of anime. Born in Paris on April 23, 1918, Druon was the nephew of the writer Joseph Kessel and became a prominent figure in French literature, notably winning the Prix Goncourt in 1948 for his novel Les Grandes Familles. He is best known for his series of historical novels Les Rois maudits (The Accursed Kings), a seven-book saga of French royal intrigue published in the 1950s and 1970s. In addition to his literary work, Druon served as France's Minister of Cultural Affairs from 1973 to 1974. He died in Paris on April 14, 2009.

Druon's sole credit within the anime and manga industry stems from his 1957 children's book, Tistou les pouces verts (Tistou of the Green Thumbs). This story, his only work for a young audience, is about a young boy who discovers he has a magical ability to make flowers and plants bloom instantly wherever he presses his thumb into the soil. The book has been translated into many languages and remains his primary connection to children's media.

The 1990 Japanese animated film Tistou Midori no Oyayubi (Tistou the Green Thumb) is an animated adaptation of Druon's book. Credited as the original creator, his story was adapted into a 74-minute movie co-produced between Japan and France. The film was directed by Yuji Tanno and featured animation production from the renowned studio Production I.G. It was released in Japan on March 24, 1990, and was created as a commemorative film for the International Garden and Greenery Exposition held in Osaka that same year. The adaptation remains faithful to the source material, depicting Tistou's gentle nature and his unique power, which he uses to bring beauty and hope to a prison, a hospital, and a slum, eventually using his gift to stop a war by filling cannons with flowers instead of gunpowder.

The core of Druon's identity as a creator in this context is that of a literary source author. He was not an animator, screenwriter, or director, but a celebrated novelist whose existing work was licensed for an animated production. Tistou les pouces verts stands as a unique outlier in his bibliography, which is otherwise dominated by complex historical and political dramas for adults. The themes of his children's book, such as anti-militarism, environmentalism, and the power of kindness over violence, translate directly into the anime adaptation. Unlike his famous historical series that deal with power and curses, this story presents a more hopeful and pacifist artistic identity.

The significance of Maurice Druon to the anime industry is relatively narrow but historically distinct. The 1990 film is the primary example of his work being adapted into the medium. It represents a cross-cultural collaboration where a major French literary figure's work was reinterpreted by a Japanese studio for an international audience. A new animated feature film adaptation of Tistou les pouces verts has been announced, with a planned delivery in 2028, indicating that his legacy as a source creator for animation continues. Through this single work, Maurice Druon is recognized as the original literary creator behind a notable anime film, linking the world of French letters with Japanese animation.
