Hideji Oda

Description
Hideji Oda is a Japanese manga artist born in 1962 in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. After attending a design school for three years, he began his professional career in 1984, initially working as a masseur while pursuing his creative work. His breakthrough came when he submitted work to the manga magazine Afternoon, winning the publication's Shiki Shō newcomer award and leading to his first serialized work, Kakusan, which began publication in 1992.

Oda is recognized as an original creator, with several manga series that he has both written and illustrated. His notable works include Kakusan, also known as Dispersion, which was published in two volumes between 1995 and 1998. He subsequently created Coo no Sekai, or Coo's World, a two-volume series published in 2000. His manga Miyori no Mori, published as a single volume in 2004 by Akita Shoten, served as the basis for the anime television film Miyori in the Sacred Forest. The story follows an eleven-year-old girl who becomes the guardian of a forest and its spirits after being sent to live with her grandparents in a rural village. Following the original manga, Oda published sequels including Miyori no Mori no Shiki and Zoku Miyori no Mori no Shiki, which appeared in Mystery Bonita magazine between 2007 and 2008. Another work, A Patch of Dreams, was published in 2005 as a sequel to Coo's World.

The anime adaptation of Miyori no Mori was produced by Nippon Animation and aired on Fuji Television on August 25, 2007, as a 107-minute television film with a production budget of approximately 210 million yen. The film was directed by Nizo Yamamoto, a noted art director known for his work on Studio Ghibli productions, with a screenplay by Satoko Okudera.

Oda's artistic identity is often associated with the Nouvelle manga movement, a style that blends Franco-Belgian and Japanese comic traditions. His work frequently incorporates elements of fantasy and spiritual themes, often exploring the connections between children, nature, and the supernatural. Beyond his creative work, he has also taught manga at the university level.
