Daisuke Hagiwara

Description
Daisuke Hagiwara is a Japanese manga artist best known as the illustrator of the popular romantic comedy series Horimiya. Hagiwara was born in 1988 in Nagano Prefecture. Her professional career began after she won a contest held by Square Enix, which led to her debut in 2010 with the one-shot story Back to the Jack, based on a script by Yuki Shinkiba.

Hagiwara is most recognized for her work on Horimiya, which began serialization in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine in 2011. For this project, she serves as the artist, adapting the story from a webcomic titled Hori-san to Miyamura-kun by the original creator, HERO. Hagiwara was selected for the role through a competition organized by Square Enix, with her distinct character designs and panel layouts cited as reasons for her selection. She has stated that she works indirectly with HERO through an editor, who reviews her storyboards to ensure fidelity to the original webcomic. Her goal with the adaptation was to translate the webcomic into a traditional page-turning manga format, carefully managing the rhythm and layout of events. Beyond her illustration work, Hagiwara was also credited as a character designer for the 2021 anime adaptation of Horimiya. She has said she participated in the validation process for the anime and drama adaptations, enjoying the experience of seeing the characters come to life.

In addition to Horimiya, Hagiwara has worked on other projects. She created a one-shot titled Dog and My Family Circumstance in 2013 and collaborated with writer Shizuku Totono on the romantic comedy Ne Ne Ne, also known as Nen Ne no Nene, which was published as a single volume in 2016. She has also contributed illustrations to anthologies based on other franchises, including Daily Lives of High School Boys and Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-.

Hagiwara has expressed a preference for drawing teenage characters and has cited the comedy genre as an effective way to connect with a young adult audience by reflecting their conversations and classroom experiences. She has named manga such as Saint Tail and Mamotte Sugogetten as early influences. Her rise to prominence with Horimiya, a series that has been published internationally and has seen multiple anime adaptations including Horimiya: The Missing Pieces, has established her as a significant artistic talent in the romantic comedy genre.
