Caribu Marley
Description
Caribu Marley is the primary pen name of Garon Tsuchiya, a Japanese manga writer born in Tokyo in 1947 who died on January 7, 2018. He began his career in 1979 after studying at the Gekigasonjuku, a school for manga creators founded by writer Kazuo Koike. Tsuchiya adopted the name Caribu Marley as a tribute to musician Bob Marley, and he was known for using numerous pseudonyms throughout his career, including Garon Tsuchiya, Marginal, Yuuhou Hijikata, Dark Master, and Last Pass.
His first major works appeared in 1986, when he completed two significant series in collaboration with artist Akyo Makata: Ahomansu and Meisō-Ō Border. The latter, also known as Meisouou Boodaa, served as the basis for a 1991 original video animation, establishing his presence in the anime industry. In the same period, he collaborated with artist Kaiji Kawaguchi on Hard & Loose, which was later adapted into another OVA in 1992 under the title Shiritsu Tantei Toki Shouzou Trouble Note: Hard & Loose.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Caribu Marley developed a prolific career as a manga writer, primarily working with various artists who provided illustrations for his scripts. Notable early collaborations include multiple works with Jiro Taniguchi, such as Blue Fighter, Knuckle Wars, and Live! Odyssey. He also worked with artists including Mariko Nakamura, Tadashi Matsumori, Takashi Imashiro, and Ryōichi Ikegami.
One of his most internationally recognized works is Old Boy, created with artist Nobuaki Minegishi and serialized from 1996 to 1998. The manga was adapted by director Park Chan-wook into a 2003 film that won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and the manga itself received the Will Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material in 2007.
His later works include Astral Project, published from 2004 to 2007 under the pseudonym Marginal, and Reverse Edge: Ōkawabata Tanteisha, which began in 2007 and continued under the name Yuuhou Hijikata until his death in 2018. Throughout his career, Caribu Marley was recognized as a significant figure in seinen manga and gekiga, known for his versatility across genres and his extensive network of collaborations with prominent manga artists.
