Sensaku Shigeyama

Sensaku Shigeyama was a prominent Japanese voice actor, known for his role in the animated short film Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor. His career, however, was deeply rooted in the traditional Japanese performing art of Kyogen, where he was a highly distinguished figure.
He was the fourth generation to hold the professional name Sensaku in the Okura school of Kyogen, a family line of performers based in Kyoto. Born in 1919, he succeeded to the name in 1994. His primary life's work was on the stage, where he was actively involved in classical Kyogen, as well as new Kyogen productions, Kabuki, and other dramatic forms. His contributions to Japanese culture were recognized with numerous high honors, including being designated a Living National Treasure in 1989, receiving the Order of Culture in 2007, and being named a Person of Cultural Merits.
In the realm of animation, Shigeyama is most notably recognized for his voice work in director Koji Yamamura's 2007 film, Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor. In this adaptation of the Franz Kafka short story, he provided the voice for the central character, the Country Doctor. The production was notable for featuring multiple members of the Shigeyama family in its voice cast, including his sons and grandsons, which brought a distinct vocal quality rooted in their Kyogen training to the film. The film itself was a major success in the animation festival circuit, winning several prestigious awards, such as the Grand Prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Ōfuji Noburō Award.
