Description
Sennendou Taguchi is a Japanese author and creator primarily known for his work in light novels, the foundation upon which several anime and manga adaptations have been built. Born on March 20 in Chiba Prefecture, he is a graduate of Meisei University. Taguchi made his professional debut in 2004 with the light novel series Yoshinaga-san Chi no Gargoyle, a work that also marked his first major success. This debut series was the recipient of the 5th Enterbrain Entertainment Award, a recognition that helped launch his career.

Taguchi is best known as the original creator of the Yoshinaga-san Chi no Gargoyle franchise. The story, which follows the Yoshinaga family and a living gargoyle statue that comes to protect their home, began as a light novel series published by Famitsu Bunko. The main series consisted of 15 volumes, published between January 2004 and July 2008, with illustrations by Yuji Himukai. The series’ popularity led to a manga adaptation, illustrated by Kagari Tamaoka, which was serialized in Magi-Cu magazine and compiled into two tankōbon volumes released in 2006 and 2008. The franchise was further expanded with a spin-off light novel series titled Gargoyle Alternative, which ran for five volumes from 2006 to 2009.

The success of the light novel series directly led to its adaptation into a 13-episode anime television series. Produced by Studio Hibari, the anime adaptation of Yoshinaga-san Chi no Gargoyle aired in Japan from April to June 2006. The anime covered the events of the first twelve novels from the main series. In 2021, the series was licensed for distribution by Sentai Filmworks.

Beyond his most famous work, Taguchi has maintained a consistent career as a light novelist. His other notable works include the series Honjitsu no Kishi Miroku, which ran for ten volumes, and Nanase Kourei Gakuen no Envy Blade, which spanned six volumes. He has also contributed to several collaborative anthology projects, such as the short story collection Short Stories: Boy Meets Girl in Three Minutes and Boku to Kimi no 15cm, demonstrating his active involvement in the broader light novel community. Other series attributed to him include Degen Madchen, Rental Shop Ariche, and Hamidashi Yousei Familia Seisenki.

The critical reception of Taguchi’s debut work provides insight into his artistic identity. Upon winning the Entertainment Award, the judging panel noted that Yoshinaga-san Chi no Gargoyle was written with a high degree of perfection and described the work as exuding warmth, with one novelist remarking that it had soul and was heartwarming. This suggests that a core element of his storytelling is a focus on character-driven, heartfelt narratives. His significance in the industry is marked by the success of his debut, which not only won a notable award but also became a bestseller for Famitsu Bunko and achieved adaptation into multiple other media formats, establishing him as a prominent light novel author of the mid-2000s.
