Description
Matt Caplan is an American actor and musician whose career encompasses stage, television, and voice-over work for animation and anime. He was born in New York and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he studied theater at the Governor's School for the Arts before returning to New York City to pursue acting professionally. In 2016, he relocated from New York to Los Angeles, California.
Caplan has an extensive background in theater, particularly on Broadway. His stage credits include appearing as Mark Cohen in the musical Rent, as well as roles in the revivals of South Pacific and High Fidelity. He was also part of the original cast of the Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, where he played multiple roles, including the school bully Flash Thompson, and served as an understudy and later an alternate for the lead role of Peter Parker.
In addition to his voice work, Caplan has had roles in live-action television and film. He has appeared in the television series New Amsterdam and NCIS, and in the film Across the Universe. He is also a musician, having released two studio albums and a single.
Caplan's voice-over career in anime is closely associated with NYAV Post, a New York-based recording studio known for producing English dubs. His work in this field began in the early 2000s. One of his most notable roles is Johann Faust VIII in the anime series Shaman King. He first voiced the character in the 2001 anime adaptation, taking over the role for episodes 37 through 64. Over fifteen years later, he reprised the role for the 2021 reboot of Shaman King, demonstrating a long-term association with the character.
Beyond Shaman King, Caplan voiced the lead character Keiichi Morisato in the fantasy comedy series Ah! My Goddess and its sequel, Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy. His other significant anime roles include Seiji Sawamura in Midori Days, Takeshi Noda in The Gokusen, Raiga in Kurokami: The Animation, and various characters in Samurai Deeper Kyo and Shura no Toki: Age of Chaos. He also provided the voice for Lok Lambert in the second season of the animated series Huntik: Secrets & Seekers.
After the early 2010s, Caplan's appearances in anime dubbing became less frequent as he focused on his music and theater career. However, he returned to voice work in 2018 for the English dub of the Italian live-action series Baby. This was followed by his return to anime with the 2021 Shaman King series, where he once again took on the role of Faust VIII.
