Hiroyuki Nakao

Description
Hiroyuki Nakao is a Japanese creator known primarily as the original author and architect behind the Bullbuster multimedia franchise. His career includes work as a director and writer across both anime and live-action productions.

Nakao was born on February 8, 1968, in Tokyo Prefecture, Japan. His professional portfolio spans various roles, including serving as the chief director for the anime Space Bug, which was released in 2018. His body of work also extends into live-action television, with directing credits for programs such as the NHK series Time Scoop Hunter and Nippon TV productions.

Nakao is most prominently recognized as the originator of the Bullbuster project. The franchise began not as a traditional manga or anime pitch but as a concept book released at the Comitia122 and Comiket events in November 2017. The core concept behind the project was defined by a focus on the economic realities of operating a giant robot, described as an economically legitimate robot hero story.

Following the concept book, Nakao authored a series of novels that expanded the Bullbuster universe. Published by Kadokawa, the three-volume novel series was released between December 27, 2018, and September 29, 2023, with illustrations provided by Eisaku Kubonouchi. The narrative centers on a small pest control company, Hato Industries (Namidome Industries), which uses a giant robot named the Bullbuster to exterminate giant beasts on a remote island, constantly struggling with the financial costs of fuel, ammunition, and labor.

For the anime adaptation of Bullbuster, which aired from October to December 2023, Nakao is credited alongside the creative agency P.I.C.S. as the original creator. While he did not serve as the series director for the anime—that role was filled by Hiroyasu Aoki—Nakao’s original novel series formed the foundation of the plot, and the character designs were based on Kubonouchi’s original concepts. A manga adaptation of the franchise, with Nakao again credited for the original work, began serialization in Monthly Comic Flapper in October 2023.
