Bisco Hatori

Description
Bisco Hatori is a Japanese manga artist born on August 30, 1975, in Saitama, Japan. She operates under a pen name that she has stated holds special meaning to her. Hatori made her professional debut in 1999 with a one-shot titled Isshunkan no Romance, published in the shōjo manga magazine LaLa DX. Her first serialized work was Millennium Snow, a series centered on a young woman with a heart condition and a reluctant vampire, which earned her the Outstanding Debut award at the 26th Hakusensha Newcomers Awards. This series was initially placed on hiatus as Hatori began work on what would become her breakout hit.

Hatori is best known for creating the manga Ouran High School Host Club, which was serialized from 2002 to 2010 and compiled into 18 volumes. The series achieved significant commercial success, ranking among the top 50 best-selling manga in Japan in both 2008 and 2009. It follows Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at an elite academy who is forced to work for the school’s host club after breaking an expensive vase, leading to comedic and heartfelt explorations of identity, social roles, and relationships. The popularity of the original manga led to a 26-episode anime television adaptation, as well as a live-action television drama and a feature film.

After completing Ouran High School Host Club, Hatori returned to finish Millennium Snow in 2014. She then created the series Behind the Scenes!!, a comedy serialized from 2014 to 2018 and collected in seven volumes. This story follows a socially anxious college student who joins the art squad for a film production program, exploring creative collaboration and personal growth. In addition to these major works, she has produced other titles including the one-shot Detarame Mōsōryoku Opera in 2012 and the short story collection Petite Pêche from 2013 to 2015.

Regarding her artistic identity, Hatori has cited the science fiction manga Please Save My Earth and the sports series Slam Dunk as influences. In interviews, she has discussed that a recurring theme in her work is kindness, a value she developed after frequently changing schools as a child, which made her appreciate small gestures of inclusion. She has also spoken about her approach to character development, emphasizing that people are multifaceted and that her stories aim to show the different dimensions behind archetypal personas, such as the "cool" or "foolish prince" character types often seen in shōjo romance. This perspective is reflected in her goal of balancing comedy with authentic human relationships and personal growth. She has also noted that research for Behind the Scenes!! included visits to television studio art departments and college art squads, which influenced the series' detailed depictions of prop-making and creative collaboration.
