Yuu Tanaka is a Japanese author best known as the creator of the light novel series Reincarnated as a Sword, which has since expanded into a multimedia franchise including multiple manga adaptations and an anime television series. Tanaka is credited as the original creator for several manga works, with the majority falling within the isekai and fantasy genres.

The most significant work associated with Yuu Tanaka is Reincarnated as a Sword, also known as Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita. The series began as a web novel hosted on the user-generated content site Shōsetsuka ni Narō on October 17, 2015, and concluded on February 29, 2024. The story follows an unnamed man who is reincarnated as a sentient sword in a fantasy world after dying in a car accident, eventually becoming the partner of a young catgirl named Fran. The success of the web novel led to a light novel adaptation published by Micro Magazine under their GC Novels imprint, with illustrations by Llo. The first light novel volume was released on July 30, 2016, and as of October 2025, twenty volumes have been published. The light novel series was licensed for English release by Seven Seas Entertainment, beginning on August 6, 2019.

Beyond the original light novels, Yuu Tanaka is credited as the story author for two manga adaptations based on the same property. The first manga adaptation, also titled Reincarnated as a Sword, is illustrated by Tomowo Maruyama. It began serialization in Gentosha’s Comic Boost magazine on December 9, 2016, and has since been compiled into eighteen volumes as of the most recent publications. The second is a spin-off manga titled Reincarnated as a Sword: Another Wish, illustrated by Hinako Inoue. This series was published by Micro Magazine and ran in Comic Ride magazine from June 1, 2020, to December 28, 2022, spanning six volumes. Both manga series have been licensed for English release by Seven Seas Entertainment.

An anime television adaptation of Reincarnated as a Sword, produced by studio C2C, aired from October to December 2022 for a total of twelve episodes. While the screenplay was written by Takahiro Nagano, Yuu Tanaka is officially credited as the original creator based on the light novel series. A second season is scheduled to premiere in the fourth quarter of 2026.

In addition to the Reincarnated as a Sword franchise, Yuu Tanaka is the author of the original story for the manga Deokure Tamer no Sono Higurashi, also known in English as A Late-Start Tamer’s Laid-Back Life. The manga is illustrated by Tachibana and began publication on November 27, 2018. The story is set in a VRMMORPG called Law of Justice Online and follows a player named Yuta who becomes a Tamer class character but finds his first tamed monster is suited for farming rather than combat. This series has been published digitally in English by J-Novel Club. The original light novel series for Deokure Tamer no Sono Higurashi, also written by Tanaka and illustrated by Nardack, has been released in English by J-Novel Club. A recurring theme across Tanaka’s major works is the combination of fantasy or game world settings with unconventional approaches to character progression, often emphasizing non-combat activities, slow-paced living, or unique partnerships between protagonists.
