Shigeru Tsuyuguchi

Shigeru Tsuyuguchi was a Japanese actor who also contributed voice work to animated films, including the anime feature Band of Ninja. Born in Tokyo on April 8, 1932, he began his acting career in 1955 after joining the Haiyuza Theatre Company. He came to prominence in the late 1950s and became a favorite actor of director Shohei Imamura, appearing in several of his films, such as Unholy Desire, The Insect Woman, and Eijanaika.

While primarily known for his extensive work in live-action film and television, including a long-running role as Detective Yamamura in the popular series Taiyo ni Hoero! and roles in jidaigeki period dramas, Tsuyuguchi also performed voice roles. He provided the voice for Akechi Mitsuhide in the 1967 animated film Band of Ninja, directed by Nagisa Oshima. His most renowned voice acting role came later in his career. In 1995, he voiced the character Baron Humbert von Gikkingen in the original Japanese version of the Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart. He also served as the narrator for the 1986 film The Adventures of Chatran.

Tsuyuguchi's career spanned from the late 1950s until the mid-1990s, after which he retired from acting, a decision he publicly announced in 2013. Throughout his career, he frequently collaborated with director Shohei Imamura and actors such as Shoichi Ozawa and Masumi Harukawa. Shigeru Tsuyuguchi passed away in Tokyo on April 28, 2025, at the age of 93.
