Yousaku Kondou

Description
Yousaku Kondou was a Japanese actor and voice actor, born on August 8, 1933, in Karafuto, which is present-day Sakhalin. He began his entertainment career after training at the Actors Guild Training School, graduating as a member of the 6th term in 1957 and subsequently joining the Haiyuza theater company. His on-screen debut came in 1958 with the NHK television drama Jiken Kisha. Kondou passed away in November 2024.

While Kondou was a prolific actor in television dramas and on stage for decades, he also built a significant body of work as a voice actor. In the realm of anime, he is known for his role as King Hildebrand in the 1977 anime adaptation Sekai Meisaku Dōwa: Hakuchō no Ōji, also known as The Wild Swans. Other notable anime voice roles from the same period include his performances in the 1977 series Ie Naki Ko (Remi, Nobody's Boy) and the 1992 film Hashire Melos (Run, Melos!).

Kondou was particularly active in the field of foreign film and television dubbing. He was renowned as the regular Japanese voice for actor William Holden, a role for which he was considered a fixed voice. During the 1980s, he also frequently dubbed the voice of Sean Connery for broadcasts of the Sunday Western Picture Theater on TV Asahi, taking over from the late Yuzuru Wakayama. His extensive dubbing filmography includes works such as The Towering Inferno and Murder on the Orient Express.
