Setsuo Shinoda
Description
Setsuo Shinoda was a Japanese actor and voice actor active in the mid-20th century, recognized for his contributions to the early years of Japanese animation, particularly through his work with Toei Animation. He was born on November 3, 1924.
Shinoda is noted for his roles in two of the most significant anime films produced during the 1960s. In the 1960 feature film Alakazam the Great, also known as Saiyūki, he provided the voice for the character Sha Wujing, the monk's companion in the adaptation of the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. This film was a landmark production as one of the earliest anime features to be released in the United States.
Shortly thereafter, in 1963, he voiced the character Izanagi in The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon, a film that retells the Shinto myth of the god Susanoo's battle with the monstrous Yamata no Orochi. His performance in this film, like his work in Alakazam the Great, was part of the wave of ambitious, mythological feature films from Toei Animation that helped define the visual style and storytelling of early anime. His role in this production placed him alongside other notable voice actors of the era, such as Noriko Shindō.
Beyond these well-known theatrical features, Shinoda's career also encompassed early Japanese television animation. In 1966, he was part of the cast for the television series Rainbow Sentai Robin, where he voiced the character Benkei. This demonstrated his continued involvement in the expanding anime industry as it moved into the new medium of television.
Setsuo Shinoda passed away on May 22, 1995. His work remains a part of the foundational era of Japanese animation, preserved in films that are still regarded as classics of the period.
