Megumu Okada
Description
Megumu Okada is a Japanese manga artist born on March 15, 1971 in Tokyo. He is best known as the original creator of the martial arts series Shadow Skill, which was later adapted into anime, and for his work on the authorized spin-off Saint Seiya Episode.G.
Okada began his professional career in 1992 with the serialization of Shadow Skill in the magazine Comic Gamma. The series, which focuses on combat and martial arts, became his first major success. The original publication ran until 1996, and the manga was later continued by other publishers, including Kodansha, with new chapters appearing from 2001 to 2014. The franchise was adapted into multiple anime productions. A series of original video animations were released between 1995 and 1996, followed by a television anime series produced by Studio Deen that aired on TV Tokyo in 1998.
Following the success of Shadow Skill, Okada created the original manga Nirai Kanai, which was serialized in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine from 1999 to 2003. The series incorporates legends from the Okinawa archipelago, a location for which Okada has expressed personal affection. He also produced other original works including Oboro in 2001 and collaborated frequently with artist Ranmaru Tenma on several projects such as Fair Plays (2001-2002) and Hitotsuki! in 2009, for which Okada typically provided the story.
In 2002, Okada began work on Saint Seiya Episode.G, a spin-off manga based on Masami Kurumada's internationally successful Saint Seiya franchise. The series was serialized in Akita Shoten's Champion Red magazine and concluded after twenty collected volumes. This work established Okada as a significant figure within a major existing franchise while allowing him to develop his own visual interpretation of its universe.
Okada is recognized for a distinctive artistic style characterized by highly detailed background art and intricate illustrations. His character designs often feature androgynous figures with long, slender body types. In his work on Saint Seiya Episode.G, he rendered the series' signature armor with a more realistic, metallic plate-like appearance compared to the original manga. He works from his studio, Response, where he continues to produce manga.
