Harald Halgardt
Description
Harald Halgardt was a German actor and voice artist, born in Bremen on August 5, 1927. His career began in the 1950s with acting roles in films produced by DEFA, the state-owned film studio of East Germany, and he also performed extensively on stage. Over the following decades, he built a substantial body of work in both film and television, appearing in numerous productions. Later in his career, he became particularly well-known for his extensive voice dubbing work, which was often based in Hamburg.
In the realm of voice acting, Halgardt was frequently cast to voice authority figures, grandfatherly types, and other older male characters. A prominent example of his anime voice work is the role of Mr. Berkley in the German dub of the 1983 anime series The Yearling. He also lent his voice to the character of the Old Sea Turtle in the animated series Flipper & Lopaka. One of his most recognized dubbing roles was taking over from Alf Marholm as the voice of Count von Count on Sesamstrasse, the German co-production of Sesame Street, a role he performed from around 1999 until after 2010.
Beyond animation, Halgardt's dubbing career was extensive. He provided the German voice for characters in a wide range of live-action productions, including Dabbs Greer as Rev. Alden in a later dub of Little House on the Prairie, Stafford Repp as Chief O'Hara in Batman, and guest stars like Bob Hope in The Golden Girls. His voice work also extended to radio dramas, audiobooks, and video games. He was a frequent performer in crime dramas and children's radio plays, such as the mayor in The Magic Pudding serial, and narrated audiobooks for series like The Three Investigators and The Famous Five. An example of his work in a radio play from 1981 is his role as a Fußgänger (pedestrian) in the Verkehrsmärchen Der Wolf und Rotkäppchen in der Stadt. In the video game realm, he voiced the character lawyer Thrawtle in the German localization of Escape from Monkey Island. Harald Halgardt passed away on January 19, 2019, in his hometown of Bremen.
