Description
Shun Umezawa is a Japanese manga artist born in 1978 in Chiba Prefecture. He made his professional debut as a manga creator in 1998. Umezawa is best known as the author and illustrator of the manga series The Darwin Incident, which has been adapted into an anime television series.

Umezawa has created several manga works that have been published in collected volumes. His earlier bibliography includes titles such as Utopias, Ippiki to Kyujukyuhiki to (also known as One and Ninety-Nine), Pinky wa Nido Bell wo Narasu, Erewhon, and the short story collection Panty Stocking no Youna Sora no Moto (Under the Pantyhose-like Sky). The short story collection gained attention when it ranked fourth in the male category of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2017 guidebook.

Umezawa's most significant and widely recognized work is The Darwin Incident, a serialized manga that began publication in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in June 2020. The story follows Charlie, a humanzee or human-chimpanzee hybrid, who was rescued as an unborn infant from a research laboratory by an animal rights group. Raised by human parents, Charlie enters high school and confronts complex social issues including terrorism, online outrage, discrimination, and what it means to be human. The series has been licensed for English publication by Kodansha USA.

The Darwin Incident has received substantial critical acclaim and numerous awards. It won the Grand Prize at the 15th Manga Taishō awards in 2022. That same year, it received an Excellence Award in the Manga Division of the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. The series also ranked tenth in the male category of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022 list. Internationally, the manga has been recognized with the Prix Asie de la Critique from the French Association of Comics Critics and Journalists in 2023, as well as a BDGest'Arts award in the Album - Asia category at the 50th Angoulême International Comics Festival.

In terms of artistic identity, Umezawa's work is characterized by a focus on bioethics and social issues. The Darwin Incident originated from a short story he previously wrote called Already Human, which dealt with similar themes. He has expressed a desire to explore these topics within a broad worldview. Umezawa has noted the importance of staying sensitive to changing social contexts and information, ensuring that his work reflects contemporary understanding of issues such as veganism and animal rights. He has also stated that he structured The Darwin Incident to resemble an overseas drama, which influenced its narrative style.

An anime television series adaptation of The Darwin Incident was announced in May 2024. The series is produced by the animation studio Bellnox Films and directed by Naokatsu Tsuda, with Katsuichi Nakayama serving as assistant director. Shinichi Inotsume handles series composition, and Shinpei Tomooka is the character designer. The anime is scheduled to premiere in January 2026. In interviews surrounding the adaptation, Umezawa has emphasized the importance of depicting the story's themes directly without avoidance and has been actively involved in discussions with the production staff to ensure careful handling of potentially sensitive content.

The manga has achieved commercial success, with over 1.8 million copies in circulation as of June 2025. Shun Umezawa's body of work, particularly The Darwin Incident, has established him as a significant voice in seinen manga, known for tackling complex, real-world issues through a thoughtful and critically lauded narrative approach.
