Mario Pecqueur
Description
Mario Pecqueur was a French actor whose extensive career spanned theater, film, and television, with a significant body of work in voice acting for animated series and dubbed versions of foreign productions. Born on July 5, 1946, in Rouen, France, he trained at the Conservatory of Rouen and the École de la rue Blanche in Paris before embarking on a long stage career that included performances with the TNP company and in numerous classic plays.
From the 1980s onwards, Pecqueur became a prominent figure in the world of French dubbing, lending his voice to a wide array of characters in Japanese anime and tokusatsu series. His voice acting work is particularly noted in France for its presence in the popular genre of imported Japanese shows of that era. A key example of this is his role as the titular character Gozura in the French-language version of the 1987 anime series Oraa Guzura Dado. In the French adaptation, the show was titled Gozura, with Pecqueur providing the voice for the friendly, metal-eating monster.
His contributions to anime dubbing extended to many other well-known series. He was the French voice of the heroic space hero Jaspion in the series of the same name. In the realm of superhero teams, he voiced Professor Bias in Bioman 3: Liveman, and took on roles such as Prince Kawler in Flashman and Daigoro Koyama in Spielvan. His versatility allowed him to play both heroes and villains across series like Ninja Senshi Giraya, where he voiced Retsuga and other characters, and Turbo Ranger, for which he was the primary voice of Professor Dazai.
Beyond anime, Pecqueur's voice acting career included narrating the animated series Mofli and voicing the character Grambo in the French dub of the animated film The Mystery of the Third Planet. His dubbing work was not limited to animation; he also provided French voices for actors in live-action films and television series. Among his notable later dubbing roles were voicing Papa Julio in the Pixar film Coco, and providing voices for characters in acclaimed series such as Game of Thrones, Prison Break, The Blacklist, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
While Mario Pecqueur was widely recognized in France for his on-screen role as Divisionnaire Blondel in the long-running television series Les Cordier, juge et flic, his parallel career as a voice actor made him a familiar voice to audiences of animated and dubbed programming. He continued to work in the industry until his death on July 6, 2022, in Eaubonne, France, leaving behind a rich legacy in French popular culture both in front of the camera and behind the microphone.
