Kenji Susukida
Description
Kenji Susukida was a Japanese actor primarily known for his extensive work in theater and film, with a single, notable credit in the world of anime voice acting. He was born Tokuemon Takayama on September 14, 1898, in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. His career began on the stage, and he became a significant figure in the Shingeki (new theater) movement, co-founding influential theater companies such as the New Tsukiji Dramatic Company and later the Central Art Theater.
Susukida's screen career spanned from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, during which he appeared in numerous live-action films. His filmography is extensive, featuring prominent roles in various genres, particularly jidaigeki (period dramas) and dramas. Some of his notable film credits include Shinran (1960), Echo in the Mountains (1959), and The Seven Vows (1956). He also appeared in the 1953 film Hiroshima, which was released internationally.
His sole connection to anime voice acting came in 1959 when he provided the voice for the character Tozawa Hakuunsai, also known as Master Tozawa Hakuun, in the Toei Animation film Magic Boy. This film was a significant early work in the history of Japanese animation, being only the second feature-length anime produced by Toei Animation. While this voice role is a point of interest for anime historians, it represents a singular venture in a long and distinguished career primarily focused on stage and live-action film.
Throughout his career, Susukida frequently collaborated with many leading actors of his era, including Ryunosuke Tsukigata, Ryosuke Kagawa, and Denjiro Okochi, appearing in multiple productions with them. He passed away on May 26, 1972.
