Joonee Gamboa is a Filipino actor whose career spans over five decades in theater, film, television, and voice acting. Born Jose Espineli Gamboa Jr. on August 7, 1936, he began his artistic journey on the stage as a member of the Philippine Educational Theater Association. His entry into voice acting was unplanned, originating from his time as a radio announcer in the late 1950s, where he honed his craft through self-directed practice. This led to a prolific career voicing characters for dubbed programs, radio dramas, and narrations.

Gamboa is notably recognized in the field of anime voice acting for his work in the English-dubbed version of the Japanese television series Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V. In this series, he provided the voices for three distinct characters: Professor Sakunji, Professor Hamaguchi, and the antagonist Duke Saki. In the English adaptation, Professor Sakunji and Professor Hamaguchi are respectively known as Dr. Hook and Dr. Smith, the roles cited as examples of his voice work. This performance remains a significant part of his voice acting legacy.

Beyond anime, his voice became widely known for narrating numerous historical documentaries and programs. He narrated the 1996 television documentary José Rizal: Ang Buhay ng Isang Bayani and the 1997 documentary Batas Militar, which explored Philippine history under martial law. His authoritative voice was also featured in documentaries for networks such as National Geographic Channel, including Asia's Titanic and Inside Malacañang. His narration work has been described as shaping public consciousness of Philippine history, earning him recognition as the national narrator.

Throughout his extensive career, Gamboa has balanced voice work with a celebrated on-screen presence. He has acted in over 145 films and television shows. His performance in the 1977 film Burlesk Queen earned him the Metro Manila Film Festival award for Best Supporting Actor. He has received numerous other accolades, including a Gawad Urian Award for Best Supporting Actor, and later career honors such as the Aliw Awards Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to theater and the Sine Sandaan Living Legends of Philippine Cinema award for his body of work as a character actor.
