Jean Fontaine

Jean Fontaine was a Canadian actor, adapter, and artistic director primarily known for his extensive work in dubbing. Born in Quebec City in 1929, he began his career in radio before transitioning to voice work, becoming a prominent figure in both French and English-language dubbing for film and television.

His voice acting portfolio includes significant contributions to animated series. Fontaine is notably recognized for his role as the voice of the grandfather in the French versions of the beloved anime series Heidi in 1974. He also provided voices for the 1980 animated series Belle et Sébastien, where he played both Grandpa César and Silva, the leader of the gypsies.

Beyond animation, Fontaine's dubbing career was prolific and wide-ranging. He became the regular French voice for several major international stars. This included dubbing Richard Anderson as Oscar Goldman in the popular live-action series The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. He also served as the official Quebec French voice for Clint Eastwood in numerous films intended for the Canadian market. Earlier in his career, he took on the iconic role of Alex DeLarge in the French dubbing of Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange in 1971.

In addition to his on-screen voice work, Fontaine also worked behind the scenes as an adapter and artistic director for dubbing projects. His career spanned several decades, with work that took him between France and Quebec. He passed away in France on November 25, 2011.
