Eddie Allen

Description
Eddie Allen is an American actor best known for providing the English voice of the iconic character Leader Desslok in the classic anime series Star Blazers. His portrayal in the second series, Star Blazers: The Comet Empire, became a defining element of the show for English-speaking audiences.

Allen's path to voice acting was rooted in a lifelong passion for performance. A Baltimore native and graduate of Towson University, he credited his mother, a drama enthusiast who fled Baghdad to pursue acting, for instilling this love in him from an early age. In his twenties, he gained diverse performance experience by touring the country with a Commedia dell'arte company and a one-man mime show. He later moved to New York City to further his acting career, and it was there that he was cast in Star Blazers.

The Star Blazers dubbing project was a non-union production in the late 1970s, with recording sessions often held late at night in a small Manhattan studio. Allen, like his castmates, worked in isolation in a recording booth, syncing his performance to the original Japanese footage. He was cast as Desslok, the complex and noble leader of the Gamilon Empire, a role he inhabited for both the first and second series of the English adaptation. For his performance, Allen uniquely modeled Desslok's deliberate speech patterns on the iconic actor Boris Karloff, a creative choice that contributed to the character's memorable and distinctive presence.

Allen's most significant and enduring collaboration from this period was with his Star Blazers castmates, particularly Ken Meseroll (who voiced the hero Derek Wildstar) and Amy Howard Wilson (who voiced Nova). Decades after the show's initial airing, the three reunited for a thirtieth-anniversary panel at I-Con 29 in 2010, marking their first-ever joint public appearance. This reunion highlighted the lasting impact of their work, even though the original production was a temporary job they had long since moved on from. Interviews with Allen and Meseroll about their work on the series were also featured as special features on DVD releases of Star Blazers: The Comet Empire.

Beyond his iconic anime role, Eddie Allen's career has spanned theatre, television, and film. After his time in New York, he moved to Los Angeles in 1983, where he continued acting in various television shows. In 2007, he and his family moved back to New York, settling upstate, where he returned to his theatre roots, performing in plays and starting an improv group. He also pursued playwriting, co-writing and performing the play Finding Fathers in 2011. While Desslok remains his most famous and celebrated role, it represents a singular, noteworthy chapter in a broader and varied career as a working actor.
