David Moo
Description
David Benjamin Moo is an American former voice actor born on December 3, 1970, in Brookline, Massachusetts. Before entering the field of voice acting, he worked as an actor and theatre director in New York City during the 1990s. He began landing roles in English-language dubs of Japanese anime in the late 1990s, working with prominent studios of the era including 4Kids Entertainment, Central Park Media, NYAV Post, and TAJ Productions. His voice acting career was active from approximately 1997 until he retired from major voice work around 2008 to focus on his career as a bartender and bar owner.
Moo is perhaps best known for voicing the character Sanji in the 4Kids Entertainment English-language dub of the popular anime series One Piece. He performed the role from 2004 until the dub's cancellation in 2007. The performance, which featured a Brooklyn accent, was a creative choice made by the script directors, a fact Moo later clarified in a 2014 interview to counter fan rumors that the vocal quality was due to illness or substance use. Another significant role was that of the mischievous and powerful demon Xellos, which he voiced in the second and third seasons of The Slayers, specifically Slayers Next and Slayers Try. He also voiced the villain Panik in the 4Kids adaptation of Yu-Gi-Oh! and provided the voice for Faraji Ngala in several episodes of the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. Among his other credits, he played the character Jiunbo in the OVA series Takegami: Guardian of Darkness.
Throughout his voice acting career, Moo was known to be good friends with fellow New York-based voice actors David Brimmer, Dan Green, and Michael Sinterniklaas. Much of his voice work was recorded in professional studios as well as from a personal home studio. After his retirement from regular voice acting, the role of Xellos in subsequent seasons of The Slayers was taken over by his friend Michael Sinterniklaas.
In a notable public appearance outside of his professional fields, Moo was a contestant on the quiz show Jeopardy! in January 2019, finishing in second place.
