Hajime Kanzaka

Description
Hajime Kanzaka is a Japanese novelist and manga story writer born on July 17, 1964, in Asago, Hyogo Prefecture. After graduating from Kobe Art Technical College, he initially worked as a salaryman before making his professional writing debut in 1989. His entry into the industry came when he submitted the manuscript for Slayers to the first Fantasia Awards; it was named a runner-up, and because his home did not have a telephone, he received the news of his nomination by mail. That same year, Slayers began serialization in Dragon Magazine, marking the start of his career as a creator.

Kanzaka is best known as the original creator of the Slayers franchise. The series began as a series of light novels published under Fujimi Shobo’s Fantasia Bunko imprint, with illustrations by Rui Araizumi. The main novel series ran from 1990 to 2000 across 15 volumes, and was later supplemented by multiple spin-off novel series including Slayers Special, Slayers Delicious, and Slayers Smash. The Slayers novels have sold over 20 million copies and formed the foundation for a wide range of adaptations.

The Slayers franchise expanded extensively into manga, with Kanzaka frequently credited as the story author. Several manga titles bear his direct involvement, including the manga Shin Slayers: Falces no Sunadokei, for which he provided the story while Asahi handled the art. He was also credited as story author for the manga Slayers Evolution-R and Slayers Revolution, both illustrated by Issei Hyouju. Another manga, Slayers Light Magic, was described as a spinoff that transported the characters from Kanzaka’s original fantasy light novels into a near-future setting.

Beyond Slayers, Kanzaka created the science fiction light novel series Lost Universe, which was also adapted into an anime television series. His other story credits include the manga Higaeri Quest, Yami no Sadame o Seoumono, and Sheriff Stars MS, covering genres such as fantasy and science fiction.

The Slayers franchise has been adapted into multiple anime television series, including Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Slayers Revolution, and Slayers Evolution-R, as well as several films and original video animations. The anime adaptations brought Kanzaka’s characters and fantasy-comedy universe to a broad audience, and during the height of the anime’s popularity in the late 1990s, he appeared on the Japanese High Tax Payer Registry.

Kanzaka’s work is characterized by a blend of fantasy adventure with comedic elements. The Slayers series in particular follows the travels of the young sorceress Lina Inverse and her companions, balancing world-threatening conflicts with humor, exaggerated character dynamics, and frequent references to fantasy tropes. The setting he created features a structured cosmology involving gods, demons, and layered magical systems, which provided a versatile foundation for storytelling across novels, manga, and anime.

In the context of the light novel industry, Kanzaka is noted as part of a wave of authors who debuted through award competitions, a trend that became increasingly common in the field. His success with Slayers helped establish the model for cross-media franchises built from light novel source material. He later served as a judge for the Fantasia Awards, contributing to the development of subsequent generations of writers.
