Marc Smith
Description
Marc Smith was an American-born actor who worked extensively in London and was known for his voice work in English dubs of Japanese anime productions during the late 1980s and 1990s. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 21, 1945, his career spanned both live-action and voice acting roles in film and television before his death on December 24, 2006, in London, England.
Smith is recognized in anime for his work on English-language adaptations produced for the UK market, particularly by companies like Manga Entertainment. In the 1988 original video animation (OVA) Ultimate Teacher, he provided the English voice for the main character, Ganbachi Chabane, a genetically modified man with the abilities of a cockroach who sets out to conquer a violent high school. This performance was part of a UK dub for the World Wide Group, which featured a different cast than the later North American version produced by Ocean Studios.
Another of his notable anime roles was as the antagonist Buaku in the 1988-1989 OVA series Dominion Tank Police. Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow, the series featured Smith voicing the half-cyborg gang leader who, alongside the Puma Sisters, plots crimes in a futuristic, polluted city, bringing him into conflict with the elite Tank Police unit. This English dub was produced by Manga Entertainment in the UK and released in 1992.
Beyond these specific anime roles, Smith had a broader career as a character actor. He appeared in and provided voices for various projects, including a voice role in the anime film Project A-ko. His live-action credits included the television series Whoops Apocalypse and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He also performed dubbing work for several films, such as providing the English voice for the character Hercules in the 1983 Italian film Hercules.
