Akiji Kobayashi was a Japanese actor and voice actor with a career spanning over four decades, from 1952 until his passing in 1996. He was born on September 6, 1930, in Tokyo and, after studying at Nihon University College of Art, he joined the Haiyuza Theatre Company in 1949 to begin his training. He made his film debut in 1952 with Satsujin Yogisha. Throughout his career, he was a favored actor of renowned director Kon Ichikawa, appearing in twelve of his films.

Kobayashi is perhaps most famous for his live-action roles in tokusatsu productions, which have become iconic in Japanese popular culture. He is best known as Captain Toshio Muramatsu in the original 1966 television series Ultraman, a role that endeared him to generations of viewers. He also played the enduring character of Tobei Tachibana, often called Oya-san, in the original Kamen Rider series and several of its sequels, including Kamen Rider V3, Kamen Rider X, Kamen Rider Amazon, and Kamen Rider Stronger. These roles established him as a beloved figure in the science fiction and superhero genres.

In addition to his extensive on-screen work, Kobayashi had a significant career as a voice actor. He was the official Japanese dubbing artist for Hollywood stars John Wayne and Richard Crenna, providing their voices for many films released in Japan. His voice acting portfolio also included a wide range of roles in anime and animated features.
