Sakae Takayama was a Japanese voice actor, actor, and radio personality, best known for his leading role in the classic 1960s anime series, 8 Man. Born in Tokyo on January 27, 1937, he began his career in entertainment as a child actor, having joined a children's theater troupe in his youth. In 1955, he joined the Radio Tokyo (later TBS) television剧团 as an actor, appearing in various dramas during the early days of Japanese television. After leaving TBS, he became one of the first talents affiliated with the agency OTO, where he built a multifaceted career.
Takayama's most prominent and defining voice role was as the protagonist Hachiro Azuma and his cyborg alter ego, 8 Man, in the 1963 black-and-white television anime adaptation of 8 Man. His performance as the hard-boiled detective turned crime-fighting android remains his signature contribution to anime. Decades later, he took on the role of Tatsushi Takamura in the 1990s original video animation, Kishin Corps.
Beyond anime, Takayama was highly active in voice-over work for foreign films and television series. Among his notable dubbing roles, he provided the Japanese voice for the droid C-3PO in the theatrical release versions of the original Star Wars trilogy. His dubbing credits also include films such as Mr. Boo!インベーダー作戦 and Suspiria Part 2.
