Miiko Taka was an American actress who provided voice work for the English-language version of a classic Japanese animated film. Born on July 24, 1925, in Seattle, Washington, she was a Japanese American who was discovered by a talent scout while working as a travel agency clerk in Los Angeles, which led to her film debut in the 1957 drama Sayonara opposite Marlon Brando. In the context of animation, Taka is recognized for her role as the voice of Xiao-Qing in the English dub of the 1958 Japanese animated feature film The White Snake, also known as Panda and the Magic Serpent. This film, produced by Toei Animation, was a landmark project as Japan's first color animated feature film and one of the first anime to be released in the United States. Beyond this voice role, her career was primarily in live-action film and television, spanning from 1957 to 1982. Her other notable appearances include the films Walk Don't Run, The Art of Love, and the television miniseries Shogun. Throughout her career, she collaborated with prominent actors such as Cary Grant and Toshiro Mifune, with whom she also worked on the series Shogun. Miiko Taka passed away on January 4, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
