Robert Loggia

Description
Robert Loggia was an American actor whose career in film and television spanned over fifty years, with his voice acting work representing a smaller but notable facet of his professional activities. Born in 1930, Loggia studied journalism and served in the US Army before training at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York, launching a career that would see him become a familiar face in American entertainment. He received critical acclaim for his live-action roles, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the 1985 film Jagged Edge and an Emmy nomination for the television series Mancuso, FBI. His numerous on-screen credits include prominent films such as Scarface, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Independence Day.

Loggia's involvement in animation and voice work, while less extensive than his live-action career, included several distinct roles that showcased his distinctive, gravelly voice. One of his most significant contributions to anime was in the 1997 Japanese-produced film The Dog of Flanders. In this English-language dub of the feature, directed by Yoshio Kuroda, Loggia provided the voice for Grandpa, the caring and hardworking guardian of the young protagonist, Nello. The role required him to convey deep emotional resonance, with one review noting his performance was especially effective at "dredging vast reservoirs of emotion despite a relatively brief amount of screen-time".

Beyond this specific anime credit, Loggia's other voice work was primarily in American animation and video games. He voiced the villainous Sykes, a loan shark, in the 1988 Disney animated feature Oliver & Company. Later in his career, he ventured further into voice acting for video games, taking on roles such as the crooked cop Ray Machowski in the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto III, Admiral Petrarch in FreeSpace 2, and serving as the narrator for the video game adaptation Scarface: The World Is Yours. He also had a recurring voice role on the Adult Swim animated television series Tom Goes to the Mayor. These various projects demonstrate a career-long willingness to lend his recognizable voice to a range of characters across different media, complementing his extensive and celebrated body of live-action work.
