Dave Underwood

Description
Dave Underwood was an American voice actor known for his contributions to English-language dubs of anime during the 1990s and early 2000s. Born David Kent Underwood II on December 28, 1966, he began his career in broadcasting after attending the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield, Michigan, and later worked as a morning show host at a radio station in Wilmington, North Carolina. This background in broadcast media led to voice-over work, primarily for anime dubs produced in North Carolina.

Underwood is perhaps best recognized for his role as the cyborg Talos in the 1997 AnimEigo English dub of the classic 1983 film Crusher Joe. He reprised this role for the English dubs of the subsequent Crusher Joe OVA series, providing continuity for the character across the franchise. Another of his significant and widely noted performances was as the corrupt detective Akai in the controversial 1998 anime Kite, a role that placed him in a dark and memorable science fiction thriller.

His voice acting work extended to other notable anime titles of the era. He voiced Chief in the English version of You're Under Arrest and its subsequent motion picture. He also contributed to the English dubs of Blue Submarine No. 6, where he played Tokuhiro Iga, Ah My Goddess, and the 1987 film Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy.

Throughout his career, Underwood frequently collaborated with a consistent group of voice actors based in the North Carolina dubbing circuit. His credits often overlap with performers such as Scott Bailey, Sean P. O'Connell, Marc Matney, and Juliet Cesario, among others, indicating a stable community of voice talent for anime localization during that period. Dave Underwood passed away on April 6, 2024, at the age of 57. His work remains a part of the anime dubbing landscape of the 1990s, particularly through his roles in genre-defining titles like Crusher Joe and Kite.
