Antonio Raxel

Description
Antonio Raxel was a Mexican actor whose career spanned film, television, theater, and voice acting, with a particular impact on the dubbing of anime and animated series for Latin American audiences. He was born Antonio Salazar Raxel on April 13, 1922, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. He moved to Mexico City in the late 1940s, where he initially worked as a photography assistant before studying acting at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes under the tutelage of the renowned Japanese teacher Seki Sano. His professional career began in theater, performing in approximately 85 plays with the companies of María Tereza Montoya, Anita Blanch, and Enrique Rambal, before transitioning to film in 1950 and later to television in the early 1950s.

Raxel's distinctive voice became his hallmark, leading him to extensive work in dubbing for both Mexican and American studios. In the early 1980s, he was called to work for Televisa's dubbing company, Audiomaster, at its Los Angeles, California, laboratories. It was during this period that he became a prominent figure in the world of anime dubbing. He is widely recognized for his narration in several iconic series that defined a generation, including Robotech, Voltron, and Mazinger Z. His role in Mazinger Z was particularly notable, as he performed the voice of Baron Ashler, a character that required a unique synchronization of dubbing with actress Bertha Shute to portray the masculine side of the dual-gendered villain, working alongside up-and-coming voice actors like Jesús Barrero and Juan Alfonso Carralero.

Beyond these landmark anime series, Raxel lent his voice to a variety of other animated projects. He was the voice of the magician Mandrake in the animated series Defenders of the Earth. His dubbing work also included characters in popular animated series such as Gary Granito in The Flintstones, a car salesman and a police officer in The Jetsons, Largo in The Addams Family, the character Garra in Chuck Norris y sus Comandos Karatecas, and Master Logray in the Ewoks television series. In addition to these roles, he is also credited with voicing Doctor Raymond, the father of Lisa, in the anime series Magnos the Robot. This role aligns with his broader contributions to the "Festival de los Robots" anime block that aired throughout Latin America during the 1980s.

Throughout his career, Raxel collaborated with many of the era's prominent voice actors, including the aforementioned Bertha Shute, Jesús Barrero, and Juan Alfonso Carralero. His contributions to the entertainment industry were recognized in 1974 when he received the prestigious Medalla Virginia Fábregas award for his lifetime trajectory in acting. Although his personal life led to fewer voice acting roles upon his return to Mexico, he remained active in film and other projects until his death. Antonio Raxel passed away in Mexico City on November 25, 1999. His legacy endures as a foundational voice in the golden age of anime dubbing in Latin America, remembered for his vocal versatility and his role in bringing beloved characters and series to life for Spanish-speaking audiences.
