Antonieta Matos
Description
Maria Antonieta de Matos Aromatis Andrade Netto, known professionally as Antonieta Matos, was a Brazilian voice actress active during the late 1960s and first half of the 1970s. Born in Rio de Janeiro on March 15, 1957, she was the daughter of renowned dubbing actress Aliomar de Matos and began her career at the age of eight. Her first work was dubbing the 1965 film A Hora e a Vez de Augusto Matraga at the Peri Filmes studio, where her mother would read her lines for her to memorize and record, as she was not yet a confident reader. As one of the few child voice actors in Brazil at the time, she became highly sought after for children's roles.
Matos's career was closely associated with the CineCastro studio, where she performed some of her most recognized roles. She is notably remembered for providing the Brazilian voice of Princess Safire in the anime series Princess Knight (A Princesa e o Cavaleiro). Among her other prominent works in animation were Michael Jackson in The Jackson 5ive, the character Valéria Smith in Josie and the Pussycats and Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space, one of the voices for Tweety Bird (Piu Piu) in Looney Tunes, and the title character in the first dubbing of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Her work also extended to feature films for Disney, including the roles of Tambor in Bambi and Toulouse in The Aristocats. In live-action film, she voiced Charlie Bucket in the first dubbing of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
Throughout her career, Matos worked alongside many prominent figures in Brazilian dubbing, sharing a recording booth with professionals such as Domício Costa, Orlando Drummond, Ida Gomes, and Selma Lopes. At the Tecnisom studio, where she worked on Disney productions, many of her recordings were directed by Telmo de Avelar. Her talent was such that representatives from Disney invited her to work in the United States, an offer she ultimately declined. She noted that her voice remained well-suited for child roles even into her adolescence, and that she was cast more frequently for male characters than female ones.
Antonieta Matos left the dubbing profession in 1975 at the age of 18 after getting married and moving to Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. When she later returned to Rio de Janeiro, she found that the dubbing industry had changed significantly and she was unable to resume her career. She subsequently earned university degrees in Communication and Library Science but never worked in those fields, instead building a career as a bilingual executive secretary leveraging her fluency in English and Spanish.
