Jason Marsden is an American actor widely recognized for his extensive work as a voice artist in animation, with a career spanning several decades. Born on January 3, 1975, in Providence, Rhode Island, he began his professional acting career in the mid-1980s, appearing in live-action television series such as General Hospital and The Munsters Today. His transition into voice acting started around the same time, with early roles including Cavin in Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears. He would go on to build a prolific career, lending his voice to hundreds of characters across animated series, films, and video games.
Marsden is perhaps best known to anime audiences for his role as Haku in the English-language dub of the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away. Released in 2001, the film became a global phenomenon, and Marsden's performance as the mysterious boy who aids the protagonist Chihiro is a key part of its acclaimed English adaptation. This role is a standout example of his work in bringing Japanese animation to Western audiences.
Beyond this signature role, Marsden's voice acting portfolio is dominated by work in American animation. He has had a long-standing association with Disney, most notably as the voice of Max Goof, the son of Goofy, in A Goofy Movie (1995), its sequel An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000), and the television series House of Mouse. Other prominent Disney roles include Kovu in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998) and providing additional voices for Tarzan (1999).
His voice can be heard across a wide spectrum of popular animated series. He voiced Tino Tonitini in The Weekenders, Chester McBadbat in The Fairly OddParents, and Richie Foley / Gear in Static Shock. In the action genre, he played Chase Young in Xiaolin Showdown and had numerous roles in DC Comics animated projects, including Snapper Carr in Justice League, Billy Numerous in Teen Titans, Impulse / Bart Allen in Young Justice, and a teenage Clark Kent in Superman: The Animated Series. His work also extends to video games, where he voiced the title character in the Tak and the Power of Juju trilogy and Craig Boone in Fallout: New Vegas.
Throughout his career, Marsden has frequently collaborated with a recurring circle of voice actors, including Jeff Bennett, Jim Cummings, Tara Strong, and Rob Paulsen, as well as his long-time friend Will Friedle, with whom he worked on Boy Meets World and various animated projects. In a 2024 interview, Marsden noted that voice acting allows him to perform without memorizing lines, often from a home studio, while live-action work offers the tangible experience of costumes and on-location shoots. He has cited his role as Max Goof as particularly special due to his lifelong fandom of Disney.
