Carmen Contreras
Description
Carmen Contreras, also known as Carme Contreras, was a Spanish actress widely recognized for her extensive work in dubbing, particularly for anime and animated films into Spanish and Catalan. Born in Zaragoza in 1932, she cultivated a career spanning over seven decades across theatre, film, and television, becoming a prominent figure in the Catalan dubbing industry. Her career was marked by a prolific output in voice acting, lending her distinctive voice to a vast array of characters. Among her most notable anime roles are the twin witches Yubaba and Zeniba in the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away, a role she performed for both the Castilian Spanish and Catalan dubs. She also voiced Sawa Kannagi in the Mermaid Forest original video animation. Her other significant anime credits include the Baba the Fortune Teller in the Catalan dub of Dragon Ball Z, Nabara in Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken, and Kayo and Toki in the Catalan version of another Ghibli film, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. She also provided voices for episodes of Monster, Ranma ½, and the film Porco Rosso. While her anime work was substantial, her dubbing career was far broader. She was the voice of the title character in the Catalan version of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Marge Simpson in the Catalan dub of The Simpsons. In animation, she also voiced Roz in Monsters, Inc., Laverne in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and one of the Fates in Hercules. Her live-action dubbing work included being the regular Spanish voice for actresses such as Bette Davis, Anne Ramsey, and Irma P. Hall. In recognition of her lifelong contribution to the performing arts, she was named an Honorary Member of the Acadèmia del Cinema Català in 2012, the same year she announced her retirement from the stage. Carmen Contreras passed away in July 2020 at the age of 87.
