Diana Kou

Description
Diana Kou is an American voice actor and producer, born on February 20, 1982. She is primarily known for her work in anime dubbing during the early 2000s, with her most significant and well-documented role being the lead character in the English adaptation of the series I'm Gonna Be An Angel.

Kou's entry into professional voice acting was distinctive, as she emerged from the fan community. Before her professional debut, she was a member of the Sailor Moon cosplay performance group known as Sailor JAMboree. Her path to a professional career began with fan dubs, which eventually led to her being cast by Synch-Point, the licensing company that produced the English-language version of I'm Gonna Be An Angel. At the time of her debut, she was nineteen years old.

Her sole confirmed major voice role is that of Noelle, the hyper-active angel-in-training, in the 1999 anime television series I'm Gonna Be An Angel (Tenshi ni narumon). The series, produced by Studio Pierrot, was licensed for U.S. release by Synch-Point, which produced an English dub. In this production, Kou provided the voice for Noelle, opposite Tomoko Kawakami, who voiced the character in the original Japanese.

A notable moment in her career occurred at Anime Expo 2001, where she was formally introduced as the English voice of Noelle at a Synch-Point panel. At this event, she appeared in a full costume of her character, complete with a halo, to meet fans and participate in a joint question-and-answer session with Kawakami, the Japanese voice actress for the same role. This appearance highlighted her deep engagement with the character and the fan community from which she came.

Kou's work on I'm Gonna Be An Angel represents a significant, though brief, footnote in anime dubbing history. The English dub in which she starred was noted by reviewers for its faithful translation and for her vocal performance, which was described as closely matching the energy and tone of the original Japanese. The U.S. DVD release of the series, however, was never completed due to poor distribution and sales, making the English-language version featuring her performance a rarity for many years. In 2022, the complete English dub was made available for streaming on the platform Tubi, bringing her performance to a new audience.

Beyond this central role, her filmography includes credits for other characters in the same series. In the English version of I'm Gonna Be An Angel, she is also credited with voicing the characters Akane Manase. Additionally, her professional work extends beyond voice acting into production. Her credits as a producer include projects such as the documentary A Day in the Life of America (2019) and the film Into the Wild (2014). There is no public record of her voicing roles in any other major anime productions, making her legacy in the industry tightly connected to her portrayal of Noelle.
