Born on October 31, 1942, in Peoria, Illinois, Stiers was a classically trained actor who studied at the Juilliard School and was a founding member of the City Center Acting Company in New York. He was widely known for his role as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III on the television series MAS*H, a performance that earned him two Emmy Award nominations. His rich and distinctive voice led to extensive work in animation, documentaries, and audiobooks. In the realm of anime, Stiers is recognized for his collaborations with Studio Ghibli. He provided the voice for the narrator in the English-language version of Isao Takahata's My Neighbors the Yamadas, a 1999 film that presents the daily life of a Japanese family through a series of comedic vignettes. His narration serves as a guiding presence throughout the film. Prior to this, he voiced the character Mr. Piccolo in the English dub of Hayao Miyazaki's Porco Rosso (1992). He later voiced Kamaji, the ancient, multi-limbed boiler-man, in the English dub of another Miyazaki masterpiece, Spirited Away (2001). Beyond these specific anime roles, Stiers had a prolific career voicing characters for Disney animation, including Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, Governor Ratcliffe in Pocahontas, and Dr. Jumba Jookiba in the Lilo & Stitch franchise. He also reprised his roles as Cogsworth and Jumba Jookiba in the Kingdom Hearts video game series, which feature collaborations between Disney and Square Enix. David Ogden Stiers passed away on March 3, 2018, at the age of 75. His work in anime, though a smaller part of his larger portfolio, remains a notable example of his versatile talent and his contribution to bringing acclaimed Japanese animation to English-speaking audiences.
