Nathan Price
Description
Nathan Price is the pseudonym used by American actor Matthew Sussman for his work in anime voice acting. A graduate of Brown University who trained at the Yale School of Drama, Sussman built a career in live-action film, television, and theatre before and during his time voicing anime roles under the Price name. His on-screen appearances include films such as Pollock and Kate & Leopold, as well as television series like The Sopranos, Law & Order, and Sex and the City.
As Nathan Price, he was active in anime dubbing during the late 1990s and early 2000s, working primarily for 4Kids Entertainment and recording at studios such as TAJ Productions in New York. One of his earliest and most prominent roles was as the original English voice of Meowth from Team Rocket in the Pokémon anime. He provided the voice for the character in approximately the first thirty episodes before leaving the part to focus on his live-action career, after which he was replaced by Maddie Blaustein. Despite stepping down from the role of Meowth, he continued to voice other minor characters in Pokémon through its third season, including the character Slowking in the film Pokémon 2000.
In the series The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, specifically requested as an example, Price voiced Master Sergeant Mickey Cryburn, the co-leader of the marine detachment aboard the spaceship Soyokaze. He also played the role of Prime Minister Naku Ra Wang in the same series. The English adaptation of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor was produced by TAJ Productions, a studio where Price performed multiple roles.
His other significant anime credits include multiple characters across the Slayers franchise. In Slayers Next, he voiced Ashford, Halcyform, Kanzel, and King Moros, among others. For Slayers Try, his roles included Gravos and various additional voices. He also appeared in the dub of One Piece as the character Siam and in Harlock Saga as Yattran.
Price's voice acting work was characterized by a period of transition in the English dubbing industry, moving towards more naturalistic deliveries compared to earlier cartoonish styles. His career in anime was part of a broader professional life that included significant work in documentary filmmaking; he directed the feature documentary Who is Norman Lloyd, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2007, and served as associate producer and narrator for the TLC series World Wedding. Beyond performance, Sussman has also worked as a commercial photographer and held a position as Senior Director of Digital Presence at The New School in New York.
